Digger, It’s a disaster. Watch it..

Yesterday I watched one of the biggest box office disasters in cinema history, and I loved every single second of it. I am talking about “Digger”. It pairs one of the last true global megastar, Tom Cruise, with director Alejandro González Iñárritu, the humble maniac behind Babel, Birdman, and The Revenant. On paper, this was an unstoppable force crashing headfirst into an immovable object. In reality? It bled a staggering $200 million at the box office. But forget the corporate body count for a second. In my eyes, Digger is easily one of the most wildly misunderstood films of the decade.

The setup is delightfully unhinged: a gigantic iceberg snaps off Alaska and goes on a collision course to obliterate the planet. The only psychopath standing between humanity and total extinction? Digger Rockwell, a soul crushing, cartoonishly evil capitalist pig. Once the film hooks its claws into you, it morphs into whatever thematic fever dream you want it to be.
Is it a screaming allegory about climate change?
A brutal takedown of planet destroying capitalism?
A warning about AI wiping us out?
A vicious parody of America and Donald Trump?
Or is it just Tom Cruise staging a meta war to single handedly save modern cinema?
It’s all of them.

Iñárritu’s directing style here is precisely why mainstream audiences are losing their minds. It feels like an absurd stage play blown up for a massive IMAX screen. Right around the 25-minute mark, something happens that will force you into one of two camps: either absolute, unfiltered hatred or sheer, jaw-dropping awe. There is zero middle ground.

Tom Cruise’s commitment to this madness is terrifying. Buried under mountains of prosthetic makeup to play this rotting capitalist tyrant, he leaves every drop of sweat on the screen. He once sneered in an interview that he couldn’t care less about opening weekend box office numbers as long as he delivers a blasting piece of cinema, and he meant it. Case in point: a single, relentless long-take where Cruise goes completely nuclear, addressing the entire planet, calling humanity a bunch of spineless hypocrites, and explaining why the world desperately needs monsters like him. It’s pure, unadulterated acting venom.

If I have one real bone to pick, it’s with Riz Ahmed’s character, Dr. Ganesh. If you’re going to write an Indian scientific advisor whispering in the ear of an evil corporate overlord, the writing needs way more polish and nuance than what we got here.

Look, Digger is definitely not for everyone. If you need safe, cookie cutter blockbusters to digest your popcorn, stay far away. But if you have a shred of curiosity left and want to experience something genuinely unhinged that you’ve never seen before, ignore the mindless hate train & all the so called movie critics. Go experience Digger on the biggest screen possible. Because a decade from now, when the internet is endlessly worshipping this as an undeniable cult classic, you can look people in the eye and say, “I was there in the theater when it crashed.”
